Mirro Building

A lot of people (including me) are rightfully concerned about what is going to happen with the Mirro Building.  It takes up a lot of space, much of which isn't being used.  And--Let's face it--It could use a little TLC.  It sort of looks like an abandoned factory!

These facts have led for calls for the City to take over the building and demolish it.  Suggested uses for the reclaimed land range from a park to a stormwater management pond.

I am not in favor of the City getting involved in this matter.  To start, it is estimated that it would cost in the neighborhood of $5 million to demolish the building.  Do we want to take on this additional debt simply to get rid of something?  And, if it was demolished, what would we put in its place?  Do we need another park that is virtually kiddy-corner from Washington Park?  (Not to mention that taxpayers would have to pay to maintain another park.)  Placing a stormwater pond on relatively valuable downtown land?  With our long-term responsibilities for stormwater management still very murky?

What's more, the building has a private owner who is making sure that it is up to code.  I strongly believe in personal property rights, so I believe that this owner should be able to do what he wants with the building.  (Within reason.)  When the owner feels that the conditions are right to "do" something with the building, he will.

Is my reasoning on this issue strong as the Rock of Gibraltar or can you knock it down like a house of cards?  Build your own foundation at the discussion board.
